Legal Notices
Copyright, trademarks, the software this site is built on, and how to send us a formal notice.
This page is notices and ownership. The agreement between you and us - what you may do here, and what we are responsible for - is on the Terms and Conditions page.
Who publishes this site
Omni Academy is published and operated by Omni Academy. Correspondence of a legal nature should go to legal@omniacad.com and will be acknowledged. Please use that address rather than a support address for anything that needs a record, because support correspondence is handled on a different footing and by different people.
Copyright
Unless stated otherwise on the page itself, everything on this site is copyright Omni Academy. That covers the courses and their lessons, the articles, the concept diagrams and the data they are drawn from, the assessment questions and their explanations, the editorial structure of the catalogue, the written copy on every page, and the design and software that present them.
Copyright is asserted in each of those as a work in its own right and in the collection as a whole. The arrangement of a course into four levels, the choice of what each lesson covers and in what order, and the wording of an explanation are the parts that took the work, and they are the parts a copy would be taking.
What you may do without asking
A good deal, and deliberately so. None of the following needs our permission.
- Read anything on this site, as often as you like, with or without an account.
- Print or save a page for your own reference, including reference in the course of your work.
- Quote a short extract elsewhere - a sentence or a paragraph - provided you attribute it to Omni Academy and link to the page you took it from.
- Link to any page here, from anywhere, with no permission and no conditions. We will not ask you to remove a link and we do not require a particular form of words.
- Use a course inside a team or a classroom by pointing people at it. Sending a class to a URL is reading, not republishing.
What needs permission
Ask us at legal@omniacad.com before doing any of the following. We answer these, and the answer is often yes with conditions rather than no.
- Republishing a lesson, an article or a substantial part of one, anywhere, in any medium, whether or not it is attributed and whether or not it is behind a payment.
- Translating material from this site and publishing the translation.
- Using this material as the content of a paid course, a workshop, a certification programme or an internal training product.
- Extracting the catalogue, the lessons or the assessment questions in bulk by any automated means - including for the training or fine-tuning of a machine learning model. The robots policy says which crawlers may read these pages, and reading is not the same as taking a copy to train on.
- Using our name, our wordmark or our visual identity in a way that suggests we endorse, accredit or are affiliated with something.
The code examples are different
Every code example in a lesson is yours to use. Copy it into your own projects, change it, ship it commercially, with no attribution and without asking. That is what a teaching example is for, and a licence that made you think twice about pasting a six-line snippet would defeat the purpose of printing it.
They are supplied as teaching material rather than as production-ready software, and the disclaimers in the Terms and Conditions apply to them. An example is written to make one idea visible, which usually means it leaves out the error handling, the configuration and the hardening that the same code would need in front of real users.
Trademarks
The name Omni Academy, our wordmark and our logo are marks of Omni Academy. You may use the name to refer to this site - in a review, a reading list, a citation or a link - which is ordinary nominative use and needs no permission. You may not use the marks as part of your own name, product, domain or branding, or in any way that implies an association that does not exist.
Other names and marks that appear on this site belong to the people who own them. Python, Rust, Java, MySQL, PHP, Ruby, Go, Dart, TypeScript and the rest are referred to here because the courses are about them. Their appearance is descriptive, implies no endorsement of this site by their owners, and no claim by us over their marks is intended.
The software this site is built on
This platform is built with open-source software, and that software is used under its own licences rather than ours.
- The site is a PHP application with no framework and no build step. PHP itself is used under the PHP Licence.
- The services behind it run on Node.js and Express, with mysql2 and zod among the libraries they depend on. Node.js, Express, mysql2 and zod are all under the MIT licence; Node.js also carries the licences of its own dependencies.
- The database is MySQL, or MariaDB where the host provides that, used under the GPL and the LGPL respectively.
- The in-browser code playground runs vendored interpreters compiled to WebAssembly. Pyodide is under the Mozilla Public Licence 2.0 and carries CPython's own licence with it; the PHP and Ruby runtimes carry theirs.
- The fonts used on this site are served under the SIL Open Font Licence or are the reader's own system fonts.
Each of those licences is the authoritative statement of what it permits, and nothing on this page restricts a right any of them grants you. A full list of dependencies and their licences is in the package manifests of the source repositories; write to legal@omniacad.com if you need one in another form.
Material we did not write
Where a lesson quotes documentation, a specification or another author, the quotation is attributed in the lesson and used as fair dealing or fair use for the purpose of criticism, review, quotation and instruction. Where an example reproduces a well-known algorithm or a standard idiom, no claim is made over the idea itself - only over our expression of it.
If you believe something here has been used without the attribution it deserves, tell us. That is a correction rather than a dispute, and we would rather fix it than argue about it.
Notice and takedown
If you own the rights in something you believe has been reproduced here without permission, write to legal@omniacad.com with the following, and we will act on it.
- The address of the page on this site, copied from your browser.
- What on that page you say infringes, quoted or described precisely enough for us to find it.
- What the original is, and where it can be seen.
- Your name and a contact address, and a statement of your authority to act for the rights holder if you are not the rights holder yourself.
- A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the owner, an agent or the law.
We aim to acknowledge a complete notice within two working days and to resolve it within ten. Where a complaint is clear we will usually remove or amend the material first and discuss it afterwards, because leaving something up while the matter is argued is the wrong way round. Where it is not clear we will say so and explain why.
If material of yours was removed and you believe that was wrong, write to the same address and say so. We will reinstate anything that should not have come down.
Links to other sites
Some pages link to websites, documentation and tools run by other people. Those links are offered because they are useful and are not an endorsement. We do not control what is on the other end of a link, we do not monitor it after we publish it, and we accept no responsibility for it. A link that has rotted or now points somewhere unexpected is worth reporting, and we will fix it.
Nothing here is advice
This site teaches software engineering. Nothing on it is legal, financial, medical or other professional advice, and nothing on it should be relied on as a substitute for advice from somebody qualified to give it and accountable for giving it. Where a lesson touches on a regulated subject - data protection, accessibility obligations, the handling of personal data - it describes the engineering and not your obligations, which depend on where you are and what you are doing.
Where to write
Legal correspondence, permission requests, trademark questions and takedown notices: legal@omniacad.com. Everything else is on the contact page, which also has a form if you would rather use one than an address.
