JPG to PNG

Turn a JPG into a PNG without uploading it anywhere. The picture is converted inside this browser tab.

Your file stays on your computer. There is no upload on this page — the conversion runs in your browser, so nothing reaches our server and there is nothing stored to delete. It works offline, and it works on a file you would not send to a stranger.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Choose the JPG, or drop it on the box above.
  2. Press Convert. The PNG appears on the page.
  3. Press Download.

What converting to PNG does, and what it cannot do

PNG is lossless. Once a picture is a PNG, saving it again changes nothing at all, and that is the reason to convert: it stops any further loss.

What it cannot do is undo the loss that has already happened. A JPG threw detail away permanently when it was made, and converting it to PNG wraps that same picture in a format that will not throw away any more. The blur stays blurred and the smudges around text stay smudged. Nothing can recover what was discarded, and any tool claiming to restore it is guessing at what might have been there.

Expect the file to get bigger

Often much bigger - three to ten times is normal for a photograph. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is what lossless means, and a photograph is millions of pixels that mostly do not repeat.

If the size matters more than the format does, keep the JPG. Converting it will not make it look better, and it will make it heavier to send.

When converting is the right thing to do

  • You are about to edit the picture and will save it several times. Every JPG save loses a little more; in PNG the edits cost nothing.
  • A program or an upload form will only accept PNG.
  • You are going to cut out the background. JPG cannot store a transparent one and PNG can, so convert first and then remove it.
  • The picture is a screenshot, a chart or a logo that was saved as a JPG by mistake. It will not get back the sharpness it lost, but it will stop getting worse every time it is saved.

The picture never leaves this tab

The picture is decoded, redrawn and re-encoded inside your browser. There is no form on this page and no request to any server, so nothing is sent and nothing is stored - which also means it works with the network switched off.

Questions people ask

Is this free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no limit.

Will converting improve the quality of my JPG?

No, and be wary of anything that says it will. The detail a JPG discarded is gone for good. Converting to PNG stops any more being lost from this point on; it does not bring back what already went.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

Because it stores every pixel exactly instead of approximating. Three to ten times larger is normal for a photograph. For a screenshot or a logo the PNG is often smaller, which is why those should have been PNGs in the first place.

Does PNG support transparency?

Yes, but converting a JPG does not create any. The JPG had none to carry over, so the PNG arrives fully opaque - what it gives you is the ability to add transparency afterwards in an image editor.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. It is converted inside your browser and never sent anywhere. The page works offline.

Can I convert it back to JPG?

Yes, with the PNG to JPG page - though each round trip through JPG loses a little more, so it is worth keeping the original.
